Logistics is the process that encompasses the planning, implementation, and control of the flow of goods, services, and information from the point of origin to the point of consumption, with the goal of meeting customer requirements. This broad concept includes not only the distribution of finished products, but also raw material procurement, internal company movements, and external flows. Transport, on the other hand, refers to the physical movement of people or goods from one place to another, via infrastructure and an appropriate means of transport. In this complex landscape, various logistics models emerge that govern the interactions between transport and goods management.

It is important to clarify that transport is a part of logistics, but does not encompass it entirely. While logistics can be considered a component of the secondary sector, as it is directly involved in the production of goods, transport belongs entirely to the tertiary sector, as it represents a service. This is particularly true today, as most transport operations are outsourced and entrusted to specialized operators.

Traditionally, shippers—namely the producers of goods—were often also the owners of the transport equipment and logistics facilities, such as warehouses. In these cases, they managed the entire distribution chain internally. Over time, however, a growing trend toward outsourcing logistics activities, particularly transport, developed, thereby reducing the scope of activities directly managed by the secondary sector. This process has led to increasing specialization and outsourcing of logistics services, which today involve different stakeholders for “static” phases, such as warehousing, and “dynamic” ones, such as actual transport. Furthermore, the distinction between “asset-based” operators, who physically own vehicles and infrastructure, and “service-based” operators, who provide services without necessarily owning physical assets, has grown stronger. This diversification has led to the definition of new logistics models that are more dynamic and adaptable to the needs of global supply chains.

A typical traditional structure in an import/export operation involves multiple players: the shipper, the warehouse, road and sea transport operators, terminal operators, freight forwarders, shipping agents, and customs brokers. All of these entities have well-defined, limited roles. In recent years, however, we have been witnessing a profound evolution of these roles, changing along two main strategic paths: development focused on the core business and horizontal integration on the one hand, and development based on the integration of functions along the supply chain—namely vertical integration—on the other.

To fully understand the evolution of roles within logistics and freight transport, it is essential to start with some basic definitions. This can be achieved through organic growth, mergers and acquisitions, or via commercial or operational agreements such as slot agreements. In an import/export scenario, this approach leads players to consolidate their specific role—for example, handling only transport or only warehousing—while keeping the boundaries between functions clearly separated.

The second strategy, on the other hand, focuses on vertical integration along the supply chain. Indeed, many logistics players have begun integrating multiple functions, offering a comprehensive package of services. This phenomenon, known as contract logistics, has become established over the last thirty years and is widely predominant today. In this context, not only transport but entire logistics operations are entrusted to third-party operators who assume full operational responsibility. Today, a logistics operator can manage the production warehouse, primary transport, distribution warehouses, and final transport, all through a single integrated contract with the shipper.

Vertical integration is also evident in the intermodal sector, where some players unify both land and maritime logistics operations under single management, making it possible to offer fully integrated door-to-door services. Synergies between inland and port terminals, as well as road, rail, and maritime transport, help reduce lead times, costs, and complexity, increasing the efficiency of the entire supply chain.

In summary, traditional roles in logistics and transport are evolving toward more integrated, flexible, and specialized models. Outsourcing and the adoption of vertical and horizontal integration approaches are redefining the boundaries between manufacturers and service providers, aiming to optimize time, costs, and performance. Supply chain companies are no longer mere suppliers, but strategic partners who actively contribute to the competitiveness of the production system. Understanding and adopting the right logistics models is essential today to ensure the efficient and sustainable management of freight flows.

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.9 -
