Since 2010, Tyrol has introduced a series of limitations on truck traffic along the main road route between Italy and Germany (the A12 and A13 motorways), including night-driving bans, sectoral driving bans for specific rail-suitable goods, winter Saturday bans, and heavy vehicle flow metering (block clearance).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The European Commission, petitioned by the Italian Government under Article 259 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU, has recently ruled in favor of Italy on most of the disputed points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Traffic Data Analysis and Economic Impact<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The effectiveness and rationale behind these restrictions raise serious doubts, especially in light of the official 2023 ASFINAG data:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Passenger cars (light traffic):<\/strong> 11.7 million vehicles (83% of total traffic)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trucks (heavy traffic):<\/strong> 2.4 million vehicles (17% of total traffic)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the true objective were traffic flow optimization and congestion management, measures should primarily target the 83% of traffic rather than the 17%. However, this perspective is frequently avoided at the political level to prevent penalizing the local tourism economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Authorities display extreme caution in protecting individual passenger mobility, overlooking the fact that the Brenner corridor constitutes the vital lifeline for continental logistics: obstructing it means disrupting supply chains, with substantial damage to European industry as a whole.
