GRUBER Logistics is the first company in Europe to manage a fully decarbonised multimodal transport
Modal shift and alternative fuels – these are currently the two key pillars in decarbonising freight transport. From an operational and economic standpoint, however, these solutions are often difficult to implement successfully, so much so that 90% of freight transport is still carried out by road and alternative fuels derived from biomass are available in very scarce quantities.
Last week we put this to the test and, as the first company in Europe, carried out a fully decarbonised multimodal transport operation.

The 24-tonne shipment departed from the Verona area bound for north-western Germany. The first mile in Italy was completed using a Bio-LNG vehicle powered by liquefied biomethane derived from agricultural production waste. This technology allows for a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 95%. The CO2 reduction on the electrified intermodal section is calculated at -60%. Finally, the last leg, from the Cologne rail freight terminal to the delivery point, was carried out using a Biodiesel vehicle, delivering a 55% reduction in CO2.
