Construction Industry
Transport of building materials and earthmoving machinery
The construction sector is vast and encompasses various fields of activity: from residential and commercial construction, linked to building development, to industrial construction, which includes the creation of manufacturing facilities, as well as civil engineering works such as roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, and dams.
GRUBER Logistics has been operating in logistics and transport for the construction industry for over 90 years, managing the transport of building materials such as prefabricated elements, stone cladding, bricks, thermal insulation panels, earthmoving machinery, and even more complex equipment such as tunnel boring machines.
Your challenges are ours too
- Accessibility of loading and unloading sites for building materials, which are often poorly suited to heavy transport vehicles
- Obtaining special permits for the transport of building materials that, due to weight and dimensions, require oversized transport
- Strict adherence to delivery schedules to ensure the smooth progress of work on construction sites
- Availability of suitable vehicles for the safe transport of heavy and bulky materials

Brenner Base Tunnel
The Brenner Base Tunnel (or Brenner Basistunnel) is the joint Italian-Austrian civil engineering project for the construction of a railway tunnel linking Austria to Italy, destined to become the longest underground rail link in the world. Alongside other project partners, GRUBER Logistics handled both the transport of three tunnel boring machines (TBMs) used for excavating the exploratory tunnel and main line tunnels, as well as the handling of the components required to assemble the machines inside the tunnel.
Transport of three tunnel boring machines (TBMs)
The largest of the three machines is an impressive 80 meters long and requires a crew of 15 people operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Intermodal transport
The less challenging components traveled via the Brenner route and Switzerland. For the heaviest parts, given weight and size restrictions on German road corridors leading to the site, transport had to be carried out first by river barge and then by sea.
160 transports per machine
GRUBER Logistics transported the components of the tunnel boring machines for a total weight of 2,887 tons.
Reassembly on site
Once delivered to the Mules construction site, the TBMs were reassembled inside dedicated assembly caverns within the Brenner Base Tunnel.
