XTL – Heavy & Oversized Transport

To carry out heavy and oversized transport, the following infrastructure interventions may be required along the route, all of which we handle:

• Environmental and infrastructure protection, such as removing and renaturalizing roadside vegetation, constructing temporary lanes, or laying trackway plates to drive over traffic islands.
• Dismantling and reinstalling road signs, traffic fixtures, or steel crash barriers.
• Deploying bridging systems (e.g., flyover bridges, temporary construction roads) or civil engineering works (e.g., excavation, trench piping, funnel construction).

Without the appropriate and, above all, properly processed transport permits, heavy and oversized transports cannot be carried out.

• We define all the necessary details for the transport permit (e.g., axle load, gross weights, axle spacing, and overhangs).
• We manage all road traffic regulation fees (§ 45 StVO) and third-party statements/assessments (e.g., EIU) for you.

Meticulous preparations before and during transport ensure that everything comes together seamlessly to carry out the operation.

• Departure reports, fees/rentals for using third-party land/facilities, signage services, and police measures go hand in hand.
• Our escort vehicles (BF2, BF3, BF3plus, BF4) or police escorts safeguard the transport.

Our work does not end when the goods are delivered to their destination.

We also coordinate at the loading and unloading points and throughout the entire transport. Depending on the transport, we handle the following tasks and measures:

Arrivals and departures, transport vehicle, escort vehicles (BF2/BF3/Bf4/HiPo), technical field service, and coordination.

Heavy and oversized haulage is not just simple transport from A to B; it requires a well-engineered logistics concept.

We develop it as soon as we receive all necessary information and specific characteristics of the goods (such as top-heaviness or lashing points).

• Rail, inland waterway, road, or a multimodal combination? We evaluate all options to find the optimal transport solution for the cargo.
• We coordinate storage, intermediate warehousing, handle transshipment, and account for costs whether the infrastructure is available or non-existent.
• We also keep an eye on financial commitments for land use, costs for other transport modes, and local permits and clearances.

As soon as the logistics concept is finalized, the most extensive and crucial phase begins: transport preparation.

Taking road transport as an example:

• Once the best transport route has been identified, we verify it on-site.
• We liaise with the authorities and, if necessary, meet clients on-site to incorporate all perspectives into our planning.
• We also develop a cargo securing concept and ensure that all legal and QHSE requirements are met.

When transporting large and heavy cargo by road, we usually need to intervene in regular traffic to make room and ensure the goods arrive safely and undamaged at their destination.

• For example, we arrange no-parking zones to avoid potential bottlenecks caused by other vehicles along the route.
• To manage traffic during the transport itself, we draw up traffic management plans (RSA) for diversions, no-parking zones, and restrictions.

Since not just any tractor and trailer can be used for abnormal loads, the entire vehicle combination must meet special requirements.

• We routinely obtain the required special permit in accordance with §70 StVZO.
• We ensure the vehicle is equipped with the necessary technology for the job and are capable of installing it in-house.
• In addition, we accurately calculate the transport’s load distribution and, if necessary, fit country-specific equipment (such as special signage).
